Why do College Diploma Replacements Take so Long?

Delays in obtaining college diploma replacements are all too real for ex-graduates!
Discovering you’ve lost your college diploma usually comes as a surprise: You dig through endless boxes, feeling your panic escalate all the while… What if your expensive degree was all for naught, because you can’t prove you actually got it? In a frenzy, you sit down and start Googling “college diploma replacements”… Only to discover that while it’s usually possible to get one, it’s going to take time. Getting a fresh copy of your college diploma usually takes 6-8 weeks or longer, for the following reasons:
1. There’s a lot of “red tape” to get through as you begin the process.
You can’t just call up your old college, ask for a replacement diploma, and have them mail one out, unfortunately. Most colleges are FERPA compliant, so they will only accept mailed, written diploma requests. (This is done to prevent fraud and identity theft, but it certainly doesn’t make the replacement process any easier.)
2. You’ll have to provide a lot of data.
In order to get a new diploma, you’ll have to contact the Office of the Registrar. Most Registrars will demand all of the following information before issuing you a new diploma:
- The reason you’re seeking a replacement diploma!
- Your birth date!
- Your Social Security number!
- The name of your college or university!
- The date you graduated!
- Which degree(s) you earned!
- Your current mailing address!
- A notarized sworn statement in order to prove that your diploma has been lost.
As you can no doubt guess, Registrars aren’t typically very trusting, and having to prove your case can create additional delays.
3. Schools tend to adhere to their own printing schedules.
Given the fact that your college will charge you upwards of $150+ for a replacement diploma, you would expect them to put your order through immediately. Alas, most of them don’t. Most schools try to optimize their time and costs by only putting in orders for new diplomas when it suits their schedule… Either during peak times of the semester when a lot of diplomas are being printed, or when they get a sufficient number of requests from students. While this desire to put in bulk orders makes practical sense for the school, it can cause frustrating delays for people who need their diplomas quickly.
For some people, the wait times involved in securing a replacement diploma are no big deal. For others, however, such as those starting new jobs who have been asked to provide proof of their education, it can be catastrophic.
Fortunately, if you’re really caught in a bind and your new boss wants you to hang your diploma up by Monday, there is a quicker (and often cheaper) option. You can get a replica diploma created by a company that specializes in making “fake” diplomas (don’t worry, this is 100% legal). Some of these companies, such as buyafakediploma.com, offer perks like same-day service and even Saturday delivery, so you can get an authentic-looking copy of your diploma in a hurry. It may not be your first choice, but it’s a lot better than missing out on an awesome new job opportunity due to the overly bureaucratic school system. Remember—nothing ventured, nothing gained, so it’s always worth a shot.
